Try This Organizing Secret Weapon…the Outbox

When it comes to cleaning and purging, are you paralyzed with indecision?  Use this organizing secret weapon called the Outbox to help you.

This time of year often brings the desire to start clean, fresh and uncluttered.  Oh, wouldn’t it be nice if we could wave a wand and have everything purged, put away and completely organized?  But what if we want to pare down, but are having trouble letting go of things?  We might think we’ll need it someday or be able to fit into it someday.

We’ve all been there.  Apartment Therapy brings us a tested practice that really could be life-altering when it comes to those tough decisions.  It’s called the Outbox.  Whenever you come across something that you think you need to part with, but are having trouble saying goodbye to, put it in the Outbox.

The outbox is not garbage, nor does it need to be an actual box. It is a halfway house where things sit while their fate is being decided. You should never be afraid to put something in the Outbox.  – from Apartment Therapy 8-Step Home Cure book

This process is really about separating the object from your daily life and seeing if you miss it.  It allows you to remove the emotion from the object so you can see it more objectively.  Check out the rules below and at the Apartment Therapy site and give it a go!

Here are the rules for the organizing secret weapon…the Outbox:

1. Anything can go in
2. Let it get messy
3. Everything has to stay there for a week
4. When time is up, decide what to do with it:  keep it, leave it there as an “undecided” for another week, dispose of it

Visit Apartment Therapy for more on this system and making it work for you.
