Make A DIY Kitchen Island From A $5 Yard Sale Cabinet!

We love a good upcycle.  Watch how a $5 cabinet gets transformed into a stylish and functional mobile DIY kitchen island that includes trash storage!

You know what they say about good bones.  It’s what you want in your furniture, house, and body ;o  And when it comes to renovating or rehab, good bones are the holy grail.  Fortunately, a little bit of searching can usually get you a well-made cabinet or chest of drawers that, with a little bit of creativity, can be transformed into any sort of beautiful and useful piece.

Check out this pictorial from Sawdust 2 Stitches that shows how she converted an old, but well-made 5 dollar yard sale cabinet into this functional and mobile island.  Using the cabinet’s box frame as a starting point, she supplemented the structure with scrap paneling and trim.  Then she designed it to accommodate 2 trash bins, center storage and even a towel bar.

The upcycle is so useful and creative!  She even put it on casters so that she can move it when she expects more kitchen traffic.  For just a few dollars and some manual labor, she’s added additional storage and countertop space to the kitchen. What a great idea for a smaller space or if you’re looking to update your current space. I love all of these little tips and tricks that truly make your house a home. There’s no doubt that Sawdust 2 Stitches is our DIY hero!
